Purpose
This policy ensures the safety, well-being and security of all residents, guests and staff by outlining items that are not permitted in university-owned residential facilities.
Scope
This policy applies to everyone—residents, guests and staff—within university-operated housing, including residence halls, apartments and special-interest living communities.
Fire hazards & Flammable items
- Candles (including decorative or unlit)
- Incense, oil burners or anything with an open flame
- Fireworks, sparklers or explosives
- Flammable liquids (e.g., gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid)
- Halogen lamps
Appliances and cooking equipment
Please refer to Residential Life policy on Appliances. Unless provided by or approved in writing by Residential Life:
- Hot plates, toaster ovens, air‑fryers or deep fryers
- Electric skillets, griddles, indoor grills (e.g., George Foreman)
- Microwaves (except in designated kitchens)
- Refrigerators that exceed size or energy limits
- Space heaters or portable air-conditioners
Use of approved items is limited to designated common‑area kitchens.
Weapons and related items
Please refer to the University’s policy on Weapons, firearms, & explosives.
- Firearms (real or replica), including BB guns, airsoft guns and paintball markers
- Ammunition or shell casings
- Stun guns or tasers
- Knives with blades longer than 4 inches (except kitchen-quality knives)
- Bows, arrows, swords and martial-arts weapons
Alcohol and Drugs
Washington University is committed to maintaining a safe and healthful environment for members of the University community by promoting a drug-free environment as well as one free of the abuse of alcohol. Violations of this policy will be handled according to existing policies and procedures concerning the conduct of faculty, staff, and students.
This policy is adopted in accordance with the Drug-Free Workplace Act and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act.
Electrical and broadcasting devices
- Personal routers or Wi‑Fi networks
- Signal jammers, repeaters or similar equipment
- Unauthorized electrical wiring or splices
- Extension cords that lack surge protection or UL approval
Pets and Animals
- Pets (except fish in tanks no larger than ten gallons)
- Service or emotional‑support animals not approved through the university accommodation process
Other restricted items
- Hoverboards, electric scooters and similar personal transport devices (indoors or charging)
- Waterbeds or oversized furniture not furnished by Residential Life
- Outdoor grills, propane tanks or charcoal
- Large decorative pieces (e.g., tapestries, live trees) that pose fire or safety risks
Enforcement and consequences
- Prohibited items will be removed immediately.
- Violations may result in conduct action, fines, or housing agreement termination, depending on severity or recurrence.
- Residents are responsible for informing guests of the policy.
Exceptions and appeals
Residents may request clarification or an exemption—such as for medical devices or religious items—by submitting a written request, including supporting documentation, to Residential Life.
