Electrical Appliances that incorporate unshielded heating elements or draw more than 750 Watts are prohibited. All appliances used must be in good condition with special attention given to seals, electrical cords and plugs. Therefore, all appliances and their cords must be UL approved. Additionally, only power strips with circuit breakers may be used as extension cords. This list is not exhaustive so if you are uncertain about whether or not an item is prohibited, please contact our office prior to purchasing.
Prohibited appliances include (but are not limited to):
- Conventional toasters
- Coffee pots (with open heating element)
- Instant water-heating elements
- Electric kettles without an automatic shut-off function
- Electric blankets
- Induction cooktops. Please use available stove tops located in community kitchens or in university apartments with full kitchens (Greenway, The Lofts, Millbrook, University Drive, and Village East)
- Halogen lights are prohibited
- Hot plates
- Gas or charcoal grills
- Candle warmers (see Candles policy)
- Personal or space heaters
- Satellite dishes
- Inflatable pools or hot tubs
- Propane cylinders
- Personal bidets
Authorized appliances include (but are not limited to):
- Microwaves (750 watts or under)
- Toaster oven (with front panel)
- Electric Blankets with an automatic shut off
- Electric kettles without an automatic shut-off function
- Micro-fridge or mini-fridge (1.5 – 1.7 cubic feet)
- Keurigs
- Electric clothing and steam irons may be used only in areas where special utility outlets are provided, such as in designated utility or laundry rooms. You may only use your electric irons in your room if it is connected to a surge protector/power strip.
- Small space fans
- Waffle Irons with an automatic shut off
Items Allowed in University Apartments with full kitchens (Greenway, The Lofts, Millbrook, University Drive, and Village East):
Some items are permissible only in university apartments with full kitchens.
- Air fryers with lids
- Electric grills
- Toasters
