WashU Residential Life provides students with an opportunity to remain in Residential Life housing beyond their checkout date, but for specific reasons.

Late stay requests will only be approved for the following reasons:

  • You are graduating, or your sibling is graduating. Siblings of graduating students will be charged for each night’s stay.
  • You are registered for summer session one and summer school housing.
  • You are registered for summer intern/research housing.
  • Participation in a WashU affiliated program that requires a late departure date (e.g., athletics). If you fit this criteria, your group/department/coach will submit a Late Stay on your behalf. Please connect with them soon to discuss your eligibility for a Sponsored Late Stay.
  • You are unable to make travel accommodations due to finals schedule (usually only applies to international travel).

Late stay requests will not be approved for the following reasons:

  • Transition to an off-campus apartment or private lease
  • Any type of scheduled test or certification
  • Forgetting or ignoring communications sent from Residential Life and/or Conference Services regarding occupancy.

Important: Please note, if a request is not submitted and it is found that a student has not departed by the deadline, that student will be charged an additional $50 for improper check-out in addition to the nightly rate.

Spring Late Stay

The Late Stay Request Form will be open from Wednesday, April 1, 2026 until Thursday, April 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. CST. Please fill out the form on the Housing Portal. The form has all of the detailed information regarding Late Stay requests, including terms and conditions.

Students signed their housing contracts with an end date of Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 11:59 a.m. All students except for those with approved Late Stays or are a graduating senior must be moved out by that time. You need to coordinate your travel plans so that you are able to depart by the deadline.

Graduating seniors are granted a complimentary Late Stay from Thursday, May 7, 2026 through Friday, May 15, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Graduating seniors must appear on the graduating students list managed by the Office of the University Registrar.

All submissions to the Late Stay Request Form are subject to approval by Residential Life. Filling out the Late Stay Request Form does not guarantee that your request will be approved.

For students who have approved Late Stay requests, $60 per night, starting the night of Thursday, May 7, will be charged to their student account. This charge does not apply to graduating seniors or students who are approved to Late Stay through a WashU program (namely athletics or those with Commencement responsibilities) up until Friday, May 15. Any requests to stay later than the graduation deadline or the deadline set by your program would be subject to the $60 per night rate. There is more information regarding the details in the Late Stay Request form located on the Housing Portal.
